Details & History

I just bought a "grey snake" - never been used as it has been sitting in the case for the past 13 years. It is similar to the one shown in the gallery, but there are a few minor differences that I'm curious about. First, it only has a single humbucker (IBZ USA F-1), in the bridge position. The headstock logo is silver and shows the USA Custom to the left of the "Ibanez" and not above it like all USA customs I've seen. The serial # is 891653 - which tells me it's an '89 (likely sold in '90?). I've sent a few pics of it.

Hi Jerry,

As I promised many many months ago, here are the pictures of my grey snake Ibanez.  Like I told you the story around me finding this guitar was very strange.  I had just got the craving for a new guitar and as I was driving to a nearby town Denton TX, I told my wife that I wanted a grey snake skin guitar.  Two to three weeks later I had almost given up on finding a custom Ibanez and went to the local guitar center in Plano TX and asked about a book for custom Jackson guitars.

After 5 or 6 minutes of the dealer not finding a book he looked me in the eye and said "would you be interested in a snake skin Ibanez guitar?".  I thought no way, Ibanez doesn't make these anymore.  He walked in the back and brought me the case and guitar, we opened it up and sure enough it was a silver and black snake skin guitar.  Almost perfect condition.  There is absolutely no fretware, well there was no fretware.

The guitar is a custom USA, the first 2 numbers of the serial number are 89.  I am guessing that the guitar was made in 89 and there is no F in the serial number.  Anyhow, I just want to say to whom ever gave this guitar up, Many many many thanks!!

Details & History

Based on the 700 series, the USA Custom series was designed to be an affordable 'custom' range. More customized then custom, you were able to select from a number of finishes, necks, inlays, headstocks, and pick up's to create a guitar for yourself. So whilst not strictly a Luthier's one off, the USA Custom's still are very sort after and collectable. Numbers are very vague and (with the exception of the early very rare pre-production runs thought to number no more then 250 pieces), extremely hard to tie down. (its up to you lot out there that have them to give us details. Please Ed!). Points to notice are the Ibanez Edge trem system, (like the early Jem's) on the Graphic series, with the option for a hard tail on the Exotic woods, and a cutaway neck joint, again like the Jem's and again the exotic woods got the AANJ as a bonus. (Why just them? Ed!). And the rather 'handily' placed volume knob right under the bridge pick up.

The 'Grey Snake' design is one of the Metal Design series, (made by laying fabric under the clear coat ala JEM77FP) believed to have been available through 1990 - 92.  If you can help with further information on the guitar, please get in touch.
