The UVMC, I think in the early 90’s we all though that if we had the guitar we would be able to play Passion & Warfare.  Just in case, 15 years on anyone has the same misconception….. It Won’t!!  You would however have a rare and VERY Cool guitar.  I think numbers stand somewhere between 1000 and 1500.  They were painted either by ATD in the US or In Japan…. Generally the ATD’s are considered more collectable (Must get around to pic’ing the ATD) to the collector and those that know….. those that don’t know, don’t really mind as long as it looks like the one on P&W!!  The Japanese ones vary from sk pink, dy yellow and lng green, to red, green and yellow….. the latter often referred to as MKR…Mustard, Ketchup, Relish.  You will find a common saying in sales pitches that …’this is a Japanese swirl… but a good one’ and I will say the same for mine…. Very UVMC-like in the colours.  If you ask most people what a UVMC looks like… it would be something like this!

Dimarzio pups and of course 7 strings….. if you look closely I just snapped the low B whist having a quick strum while she was out for pics….don’t know how!

Hi, this is my new Ibanez Universe UV77MC, which I’ve just bought after it was advertised on ebay.

It is in dead mint, absolutely unplayed condition, and it’s one of the earliest examples, pre ATD swirl, serial no. 902204.

I bought this UVMC in August this year (MMIV), it's either a 90 or 91, the first two digits of the serial No are completely gone, so I can't really tell, but it's got an Edge not a Lo Pro, it's not pristine, but the defects are relatively small and virtually unnoticeable, the biggest being some finish missing from the body around the trem cover on the back where it looks like someone has removed the cover for the first time, and it has stuck to the guitar finish, lifting it off, they should've used a hobby knife on it first to break the seal. It looks like it's had the trem studs (that are in the body, that take the trem posts) replaced at some point. It's had the bridge pickup changed for a Seymour Duncan, I don't know which model though, I've got the original that came out, so it'll probably be going back in, though I quite like the sound of the Duncan, so maybe not, it may be eye catching, but it is meant to be played after all. My brother Tornbuckle likes it and he's just eaten a juicy Buhna cooked with an egg.

I am the lucky owner of a Universe MC.
The finish is great. It's almost green, yellow and red.
Never saw a better one.
The condition is really awesome.
Here are some pics. Hope you like it.

Details & History

I bought this '91 Universe in early 1996. Soon after, Steve Vai made a signing appearance at a music store in San Antonio, TX during the first G3 tour. The guys guarding the doors told me that no one could bring a guitar in for him to sign, so I had to leave it in my car, and only was able to take my Passion & Warfare CD inside. When I got up to Vai in the line, I asked him if he could sign my multicolored Universe. He said, "Sure!" and I told him that the store employees had refused me bringing it in, but I was pushed on out of the store by the drones before he could respond, and gave up hope.

So I left the store, still pretty happy with my signed CD and promo photo. Then, before I got back in my car, Vai's manager came out, spotted me, and told me that Steve wanted to sign it. Dude took my guitar out of the car and back inside (though I was still barred entry, illegally trying to brandish an instrument in a music store) along with a metallic-gold marking pen I had bought just for this possible signing. Steve Vai signed the guitar with the gold pen just under the bridge (which is how I asked his manager to have him sign), but Vai noticed, as I did later, that the gold ink didn't show up so well against the brightly colored finish, so he evidently took it upon himself to sign the back of the headstock in black magic marker.

Thus my dream guitar was signed twice in one sitting by the master himself. Needless to say, I was stunned, since the a$$holes working the music store told me I wouldn't be able to get it autographed at all.

The guitar itself is in very near mint condition, with no neck or fretboard wear and only a couple of miniscule finish spots. The colors are more striking than these photos portray -- the colors that show as pink in the pics are more blue in real life, which is rare for the UV77MC, and the rosewood board has a very nice tone to it. This is a Darren Johansen/ATD swirl, not one of the so-called "MKR" swirls made in Japan. This is my most prized possession (and no, it's never going to be for sale).

Ever since P&W came out, I've been searching for a Universe 77MC. In 2002 I got lucky and found three MC's that where for sale. I got to chose the nicest swirl (witch also had the nicest price).
The serial nr. is 913615 and I had it signed by Steve Vai on may 18th 2004 (back of headstock).
Steve had some rehearsals that week in my hometown with the Dutch Metropole Orchestra

This may not be the prettiest UV77MC but its my baby.
I sold this 4 years ago to a music store and kicked my self ever since. anyway to make a long story short , I wanted to get it back but didn't know where it went to.

the almost 4 years to the day (November 29,2002) I found it one eBay!! So I e-mailed the guy who had it for sale , told him I  would like to buy it back and could I call him .

He e-mailed me back his phone number so I could call him.
When I talked to him he laughed saying he had been trying to track ME down to see if I would buy I back, when he didn't have any luck finding me he put it one eBay one night and I e-mailed him the next morning.

I think its fate that's brought me and that guitar back together. Don't you?
