Details & History

As big of a fan I am of the original JPM, it should be no surprise that I'm an even bigger fan of this model. This guitar was produced in 1998 to commemorate Ibanez's 90th anniversary as a guitar manufacturer. Several models were produced, including a Steve Vai model (JEM90--got one of these), a Joe Satriani model (JS90--got one of these, too), and a Paul Gilbert model (PGM90--don't know if I want one of these). This is, by far, the coolest 90th anniversary model made based upon the finish alone (although the blue-blasted finish on the JEM90 is a close second). If you look closely at the design, you can see that it was traced on with a pencil before the stain was applied (like the RG-ART). This improves upon the original JPM with a flamed-maple top, unfinished neck, and ebony fretboard. Oddly, more of these were produced than the original JPM series.

Body Basswood with flamed maple top
Neck 1 pc. maple Viper neck, all-access neck joint, 25.5" scale
Fretboard Ebony, bound,
24 frets with offset abalone dot inlay at 12th fret and 90th anniversary inlay at 24th fret
Pickups (2) Dimarzio humbuckers--Air Norton DP193 (N) & Steve's Special DP161 (B)--direct mounted!!
Controls 1 volume, 1 tone, 3-way switch
Finish Picasso graphic (blue, turquoise, & yellow transparent)

Matching headstock with gold Ibanez logo

Back of body is painted black

*If any specs are not correct, please let me know... I got most of these figures off the 'net and by word-of-mouth, so they may not be 100% accurate, and I may just be ignorant enough to believe it.

Great Tone, Great Feel. Came with the Cert and it was only after I bought it that I realised that the headstock was flamed too. Killer finish.

Thanks to Anon for this interesting comparison between two of the JPM models

What I like more about the 90th than about the P3 is 1. the flame maple top and 2. the ebony fretboard. I think the maple top makes the sound a bit warmer. The finish is also very cool. It's a limited model, only 450 were made. The guitar comes with a certificate signed by John Petrucci. This certificate also contains a short description of the guitar.
